Prof. Helmut Wagner ist Professor für Volkswirtschaftslehre an der Fernuniversität Hagen, insbesondere nationale Wirtschaftspolitik und internationale Verflechtungen, Präsident des Center for East Asia Macroeconomic Studies (CEAMeS) sowie Abteilungsleiter am Hagener Institut für Managementstudien (HIMS). Er hatte auch anderswo verschiedene Professuren und Gastpositionen (Forschungsprofessuren, Beratertätigkeiten) inne, z. B. am Massachusetts Institute of Technology, der Princeton University, der University of California, dem Internationalen Währungsfonds, der Bank of Japan (IMES), der Federal Reserve Bank, San Francisco, der Hitotsubashi University (Japan) und der Xiamen University (China). Seine Arbeiten wurden u. a. im Journal of Banking and Finance, World Development, Journal of Comparative Economics, Review of International Economics, China Economic Review und Journal of Economic Integration veröffentlicht. Mit seinem ersten Sachbuch zu China möchte er einer breiteren Leserschaft ein grundlegendes Verständnis für die faszinierende, aber auch komplexe Entwicklung Chinas hin zu einer wirtschaftlichen Weltmacht vermitteln.
