His research interests include ESL\/EFL learning\/teaching motivation, demotivation, historical analysis of English education, sociocultural theory, and qualitative methodology. He has published over 180 papers and book chapters and 5 books on various topics in L2 motivation and language education. His recent studies have been published in the Canadian Modern Language Review, System, Educational Gerontology, Language and Intercultural Communication, Language and Social Interaction, Language Teaching Research, the Asia-Pacific Education Researcher, and Asia Pacific Education Review.
